Brent
This isn't the best of news, but I thought you should know it.
Margaret (Bertram) Ray (daughter of Amos) had 3 children
Jim, Linda, and Mike. Michael Vernon Ray (35) died on Tues 9/7/99 from
burns suffered in an explosion at the factory where he worked in
Huntsville
Alabama.
He was married to Robin, they had no children. Funeral and Mem. services
will be this Sat in Huntsville.
We were away for the Labor Day weekend and didn't find this out until we
returned home late Mon.
Linda Ray, who was the first to contact you is Mike's sister. Jim is her
older brother, who lives in Farmington. I play golf with him as often as
we
can get out on Sats. Their father Jim lives near Las Vegas. The whole
family has been in Huntsville since the accident happened last Thurs 9/2
I know this isn't the best news but I also realize that things and times
need to be documented.
Hope all is well with you, things here are starting to get back to
normal,
kids in school, work slowing down, etc.
Will drop you a line when I have some better news TTYL Dale

• Letter 11, 1999
Hello cuz,
My mom will be very excited to know that you've replied! She was
sooooo excited she wanted to call her cousin in Detroit Clare, daughter
of Florence Bertram and Albert Steimen. I must say that my Aunt Clare
is the most interesting character on this side of the family. She
never has a dull moment and I'm proud to say that she is my Godmother.
I'm sorry it took me so long to reply but I was returning to Phoenix
after my visit to Michigan to see the family. I'm afraid to say that
my mom does not know how to use the computer and I was showing her for
the first time when we found your site and unfortunately I don't think
that she will remember how to get back on. My dad bought his computer
to play games, basically. The internet is very confusing to them but
I'm sure they will get better with time. They've only had the computer
for 4 yrs now:)
I'll do my best not to confuse you with the history of our side but you
will have to be patient for this is the first time I've done this type
of research. Now, my grandmother on my father's side is an expert at
this and has completed our tree from that side off the family so she
will be very excited to know that I filled this side in without
traveling all over the world as she did.
Martin Bertram moved to Houghton was a brew master (which is probably
why we love beer so much) buried in Houghton. Married...
Clara Kraus whom was German and we can find nothing about. Buried in
Houghton
These two gave birth to (1-4)...
1. Carl, born 1900 never married and is buried next to his mother and
father in Houghton.
2. Florence, born 1903, was our one and only arranged marriage at
birth by her mother to one Albert Steimen born approximately 1888-1933
died. Whom was 15 at the time of Florence's birth. They gave birth to
Claire Marie, my Godmother, in 1933. Albert died either 3 months
before or after Claire was born( I forgot what my mom said and didn't
write it down--I'll clarify later). When Albert died Florence moved in
with my grandmother (Lillian) and grandfather (Frances) and Clare,
Marlene (my mom), and Mary (my mom's sister) grew up together in one
house. Now once Clare turned 18, she dyed her hair, took the money
she had in her pocket and hopped a bus to Detroit. She's been in
Detroit ever since. She even moved her mother down 2 years after she
had first arrived. Now Clare married Don Cyplik (I don't know when he
was born but I believe he pasted on in 1981) and I have no idea when
but I will ask later. She gave birth to a load of children
A. Cathy 1958-1998. She had one daughter Stacey (don't know
the year maybe 1985).
B. Micheal, born 1959, married Margie (don't know maiden
name-I'll ask) Children: Micheal, Erin, Ryan
C. Judy born 1961 married James Fushiano ( I know if this name
is spelled incorrectly). They divorced but had Nichol, Daniel and
Joseph before it was final.
D. Kim born 1966 married Gary Smith (I hope that is spelled
correctly) They gave birth to Stephanie and Micheal.
E. James born 1968-Jan 1989
3. Gertrude 1905 eloped with Anges Clark, I'll have to contact Bruce
to find out when. They gave birth to Bruce(I think his first name is
Anges but call him Bruce) in 1929. Bruce married Lucy (I don't know
when). But they did give birth to Kevin and Kevin married Jeannie.
They gave birth to Kyler December 31, 1991.
4. Lillian 1908-? married Frances Ricca 1900-? . They married October
19, 1938. They gave birth to Marlene Ann 1941 and Mary Margret 1943.
1. Marlene Ann (a retired RN) b. May 7, 1941 married Larry
Stuart Willett (former engineer and retired professor)b. 1938. They
married October 1962, divorced ? and remarried 1996.They gave birth to
a load of kids including me.
A. Thomas Stuart Willett (railroad dispatch and something with
computers) Sept. 9, 1963. He married Jeana Boss April 1998 and they
gave birth to Joseph Stuart in 1998
B. Timothy John (works on the oil rigs) May 3(?) 1965.
C. Terry Andrew (engineer) June 13 1966
D Tracy Hibbard (middle school teacher and Returned Peace Corps
Volunteer Ukraine 1993-1995)) born October 26, 1968. I married Sergei
Kalugin b. March 22, 1974 in Cherkassy, Ukraine(he was born and we were
married in this city and country). Married December 24, 1994.
E. Tammy Sue August 14, 1970 (RN, going back to become a vet)
2. Mary Margret born 1943 (teacher, social worker, realestate
agent) married Micheal George (lawyer) in 1969. They gave birth to
A. Patrick (international business) b. 1971
B. Courtney Ricca 1973-1990?
C. Erin Bertram (Dietician) 1974
D. Brie 1975
Wheeo!!!! I'm tired and I'm going to send this to Stacey so that Clare
can correct my mistakes. I'll also send it to Kevin so that Bruce can
correct my other mistakes. And if I can find my Aunt Mary's address
I'll send it to her for more corrections.
It's great to hearing from you. Hope that some of this information
will be useful to you.

SOUTHWEST PACIFIC AREA
Office of the Commanding General
June 20, 1944.
Dear Mrs. Bertram:
Recently your son, Lieutenant Martin Bertram, was decorated with
the Air Medal. It was an award made in recognition of courageous service
to his combat organization, his fellow American airmen, his country, his
home, and to you. He was cited for meritorious achievement while
participating in an aerial flight northwest of New Hanover Island.
Your son was a pilot of an aircraft in a formation enganged in an attack
against an enemy convoy. His plane made a bombing run on a large
freighter, setting the vessel on fire by strafing and plunging two
500-pound bombs against its bow. As the plane passed over the ship, an
anti-aircraft shell burst into the bomb bay, completely destroying the
hydraulic system. The crew nevertheless made another run and scored two
near misses, leaving the vessel enveloped in flames and sinking
fast. Almost every hour of every day your son, and the
sons of other American mothers, are doing just such things as that here
in the Southwest Pacific. Theirs is a very real and very tangible
contribution to victory and to peace. I would like to
tell you how genuinely proud I am to have men such as your son in my
command, and how gratified I am to know that young Americans with such
courage and resourcefulness are fighting our country's battle against the
aggressor nations. You, Mrs. Bertram, have every reason to share
that pride and gratification.
Very Sincerely,
GEORGE C. KENNEY,
Lieutenant General
Commanding.

Had a call from California on Wednesday from Paul Popma about possibly
the
last upcoming air force reunion. He was in Dayton when your father
hosted the
reunion and I did the registration for him. He said I just want to tell
you
one story I"ll never forget about Martin. "We were over enemy territory
over
the water also and being shot at from below, I had slowed down and the
anvigatog yelled to speed up - we were on a bombing mission and your dad
was to drop
them. Over the target he looked over and daddy was reading one of those
little
New Testaments - he had to yell at him to put it down and drop the bomb.
Guess daddy thought this might be a bed mission and was concentrating
where he
thought might do the most good. Anyhow the reunion is in St.Louis and if
you
want to go I may be able to go with you. Paul would love to have us
attend.
Love to all Mom.

near misses, leaving the vessel enveloped in flames and sinking
Commanding.
1st Lieutenant Martin Bertram served as a pilot in USAAF fighters and
bombers in the 5th Air Force under General George Kenney, based first in
Australia, then later in New Guinea. The planes he flew on his 47 combat
missions included the P-41 Tomahawk, A-20 attack bomber, P-38 Lightning
Twin Engine Fighter, and the B-25 Mitchell medium bomber. The missions
he flew were primarily tactical air to sea and air to land missions,
strafing and bombing Japanese airfields, bases, and ships. He was shot
down twice by ship based anti-aircraft fire. After his second downing,
he was not permitted back into combat because of the seriousness of his
wounds but continued to serve as a pilot testing repaired aircraft in the
rear areas and as an Air Staff Liaison officer. He was awarded the
Purple Heart twice, the Air Medal 3 times, the Bronze Star 3 times for
actions over New Guinea, Northern Soloman Islands, and campaign of the
Bismarck Archipelago, The Distinguished Flying Cross, the Southern
Phillipines Battle Star, Phillipine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze
Star, the American Theater Ribbon, a Presidential Unit Citation and the
Asiatic Pacific Ribbon. Promoted to Captain sometime in the confusion of
war, he never received his orders and never wore the rank of captain. He
was offerred the opportunity to serve in the Korean Conflict as a Major,
but declined.
