To My Friend
HankHe was tall and slim, and just a trifle
lank, and was known to his friends, by the name of
"Hank,"John Henry Bauer, was his christened
name, but Henry or Hank, he was always the
same.He was quiet and pleasant, with a friendly
smile, and to call him friend, was quite worth
while. He was fair and impartial, this all of us
knew, when Hank our old friend, was boss of the
crew.He was quite unafraid, of the hardest of
work, for I've seen him myself, when he sweat like a
turk.To lighten the load, of some one of the
crew, like bosses so seldom, or if ever they
do.He would never intrude, in his neighbors
affairs, for he knew that all had their problems and
cares. And when problems of others were left strictly
alone, they would solve themselves, like he'd solved his
own.The building of roads was our friends last
trade, and none built them better, than the ones he
made. And over the highway, o'er straightway and
bend,I'll ever be thinking, of my road building
friend. And deep down in my heart, I hope and I
pray, that Hank will be boss on the road the
daythat I am wending my way to my new abode, for
there'll be no detour on a Hank made
road.Written in memory of John Henry Bauer by

General Notes (Husband)

Thomas L. married Mary Caroline Banks, on Oct. 16, 1875. She was small
of stature and was called 'teeny'. Times were hard in those days and
crafts were learned as a supplement to farming as a means of support.
T.L. became a craftsman in the making of small sitting chairs. Many of
them still exist today, in good condition, made without glue or nails.
He also kept a large apple orchard. Added to that, he was known as 'Bee
Larkin' because of his productive bee hives. A dram of whiskey in the
morning and one at night was the order of the day forT.L. His sons tried
to find the hiding places for his bottles but usually failed. Known as a
harsh man, he could nonetheless be helpful to those in need and was said
to be honest in character. Both he and 'Teeny' became almost deaf in
later years and constantly misunderstood each other. One incidence of
this will suffice. He once asked for a towel [Editor: he probably said,
'Where's the taal?'] and Teeny thought he said 'cow' and told him it was
in the barn! from'History of Toe River Valley' submitted by Blanche

Obituary of Anna Phelan Callaghan, Brown City Banner

----- To Her Reward ------

Mrs. Terrance Callaghan, who for the past 36 years has resided with her
husband and family half a mile west of Omard in Flynn township and who
was loved and respected by the entire community, which knew her as a kind
and devoted mother and a friend to all, departed this life, at Harper
hospital in Detroit, on Monday, Oct 8, where she had been taken on the
previous Saturday by request of Judge James Phelan of the Recorders court
of that city, who when he learned of her critical illness from an acute
attack of jaundice, insisted that she be taken to Detroit.
Mrs. Callaghan was taken ill about six weeks ago and despite the
fact that the best medical skill was procured , the patient rapidly grew
worse and was taken to Detroit as above stated, accompanied by her
daughter, Mrs. Cassie Rupp and her physician Dr. J.W. Weed. The
deceased was born in Toronto, Ont, May 20, 1846. She was twice married.
She is survived by her husband and three children by her first husband,
Mrs. Albert House of Vanderbilt, Mich, Mrs. Cassie Rupp of Lansing and
John Barber at home.

The following is taken from the Detroit Journal of Oct. 10, 1906.

There was no session in Judge Phelan's court Monday. Mrs. Anna
Callaghan, aged 59, a sister of the judge, died in Harpers hospital early
in the morning. The judge , who is wrapped up in his family, is grief
stricken. Saturday, he had his sister removed from Brown City, Mich, to
Harper hospital, never leaving her bedside until the last. It is only a
little over a year that Judge Phelan lost his mother and the present
bereavement, therefore, is a hard blow to him.
The funeral of Mrs. Anna Callaghan, sister of Judge James Phelan of the
Recorder's court, who died at Harper hospital Monday was held from the
judge's residence at No. 206 Wabash Ave, at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning
from St. Vincent's church half an hour later. The services both at the
home and the church were attended by hundreds of sorrowing friends of the
deceased and the bereaved brother and sister. The casket was almost
hidden from view by the beautiful floral tributes which spoke eloquently
of the esteem in which the deceased was held.
Judge Phelan and his sister Miss Josie Phelan, are now the only
surviving members of a Family of 10 children.

--Brown City Banner, 12 Oct 1906.

( G G grandson note:
Anna Phelan married three times,
George Barrett who died in Sanilac , 1872
Amos Barbour who died in Sanilac , 1879
Terrence Callaghan who died in Sanilac , 1909 . )

General Notes for Child Catherine Laura BARBOUR

Catherine L. Barbour Bio

Catherine was born 9 August 1876, in Sanilac County, Mi . Her parents
were Amos Barbour and Anna Phelan. She lived in Sanilac county on the
family farm until the early 1890's when she went to the Vanderbilt area,
Otsego county, probably with her sister
, Josie Barret and her husband Albert House. There she met and married
John Bertram. They were married on 3 August 1895 in Vanderbilt.
Josephine and Albert House were witnesses.
About 1900, her husband John, was killed in a railroad accident. These
were very common in Vanderbilt at the time. Her children, Martin and
Amos Bertram, were sent back to live with their grandparents in Sanilac
county. Catherine worked as a
domestic during this period ( listed in 1900 census as a servant in
Detroit home on Dix ave, near McKinstry ) , but shortly married Henry
Rupp, and Catherine and her sons were living with him at the time of the
1910 census in Flint, Mi. Catherine's mother, Anna Phelan, died in 1906,
and in the obituaries, Catherine was listed as Cassi
e Rupp of Lansing. More to find out there. Catherine lost Henry , too,
in the 1920 census she was living with her son Martin, his wife Frida
Schneider, and their daughter, Helen, in the city of Detroit.
Catherine Laura Barbour passed away on Wednesday, 8 March 1950, in
Detroit. She was buried on the 11th of March 1950 at Holy Sepulchre
Cemetery , Detroit, Michigan, Section 3 N.E. Lot 274, grave #1.
There is no grave marker. Also buried there is her son, Amos John
Bertram.
