• Letter, 12 Jan 1980 - St. Louis, Michigan
[ St. Louis MI, Jan 12 1980
Mrs... Allen,
Your letter of Nov. 3 arrived while I was spending a few weeks in
Chicago with my oldest son and wife. They brought me home in time to
make a bit of Christmas for rest of my families and I was rather tired
and have not felt up to writing. I do not seem to gain my strength back
very fast since my surgery one year ago.
My answer to what your aunt Sarah told you, she was right about me
working a short time for Mrs.. Charles Morden--they lived by the rail
road track on S. Clinton St. My name then was Alice Bauer later in 1926
I married Frank Richardson who worked for Charles in North star Card Room
& Restaurant. I was 22 at age of marriage. I believe my father &,
married sister Laura & her husband, Marjori, & Eleanor moved to Clio in
27 or 28. Margie was married soon after & Eleanor stayed with me in St.
Louis, got a job at a restaurant and was during that time she became
pregnant. I sent my father word of it & as I said before to you he was
heart broken when he came to talk things over & took her home and the
health nurse took over from there and you know the result of that. My
mother died in 1920, and father in 1940. He was a tall handsom man, and
so wonderful. I don't believe Eleanor will ever change her mind about
seeing you she is so used to past being without a family and she doesn't
even bother to keep in touch with sisters. If there is a death we see
her, she & Lloyd are quite loners.
My husband was once a friend of Jay Kerneys they both worked for
Charles but Jay was married & thought he wanted to fool around a bit and
Charles paid Frank to break it up and that also broke the friendship. I
knew Virgle also he married a friend of mine, Gladys Morrow. They are
both gone. As to making an appointment to meet you, Rose--I do not think
I want to go into that. It could bring up to many questions that would
require many answers, that have been out of the picture so many years and
I would rather leave it alone as Eleanor has requested. Sorry I can not
change it for you.
I do not have any late pictures of my sisters except a 50th
anniversary of Laura's & I do not want to part with that, so the one I
will send you was taken at Eleanor & Lloyds about 1953 or 54. I do not
remember which it was, a get together, Easter dinner I believe. These
will give you some idea of what features we have.
I believe this answers most of your questions as of now.
Hope you had a nice holiday with your families and remain well--
Alice Richardson

In 1997 Rose Allen was reunited with her birth family. At a
family reunion two months later a few of them wrote the following about
Eleanor Bauer Pontious. My memory of Eleanor is that
she lived to be a significant part of her husband's life. She and Floyd
spent a lot of time in the out-of-doors, especially in their trailer home
at Acme, near Traverse City. They both loved to fish, hunt, or hunt
mushrooms. One memorable dinner at their home when I was a
child included everything "wild", including turtle soup, venison, fish,
squirrel, etc.Fred Warner, September 21,
1997My memories of Auntie are many. She was a
constant presence in my life as I was growing up. She and Unk spent a
lot of time at our house. As I married and started a family
she made a habit of coming Wednesday and Friday evenings, as Unk had the
barber shop open then. She ate supper two nights a week at our house for
many years.Auntie loved our girls. She made Barbie Doll
clothes for them. We camped with them, and also went fishing with them
sometimes. We always had fun.She cooked and canned many
unusual items. Our youngest told her that the beaver she was cooking
smelled bad! She always loved our girls and accepted them
as they were.I could write a book...but I
won't.Joan LewisDon has
memories of Aunt Eleanor and Uncle Lloyd--Very fond
memories. Both were very caring and loving, interesting
people. They would always ask about how we were doing and always comment
on how well we looked.Aunt Eleanor was a bright spot to
us.Best of Luck and Welcome to the family! Hope to see you
soon and often!Don & Dee
RichardsonMy memory of Aunt Eleanor was that
she was a very attractive lady. I always looked forward to our
