General Notes (Husband)

CITY MAN AMONG ILL-FATED AMERICANS ON WAKE ISLAND
Raymond H. Wheeler With Contracting Firm At Base

One of the U. S. civillian workers at Wake island from whom no
word has been received since the Japanese seized the island is Raymond H.
Wheeler, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Wheeler, of 629 H St. Young Mr.
Wheeler went to the island last March to manage the Pacific Naval Base
Contractors' canteen. His parents received a letter from him on Nov. 14
telling of the progress in the development of the Wake naval base, and
shortly before Christmas received Christmas cards from him. No other
contact with the San Bernardino youth has been made. The fate of the
garrison of some 400 marines and a large number of civilians on the
island at the time it fell to the Japanese on Dec. 22 is unknown. The
last reports received by the navy were on Dec. 20 when the marine
defenders reported that they had sunk a Japanese destroyer and a gunboat
off the shores of the tiny island.
