William "Billy" Ray was the son of pioneer Thomas Ray who was already in
the Cane River Valley of Old Buncombe (Now Yancey) Co., NC, at the time
of the 1790 census. William married 1st. Jane "Jenny" Jennings, born
about 1808, daughter of Revolutionary War vetern James Jennings and wife
Hannah Martin. They lived in a large two story house which sat at the
junction of Banks and Prices Creek, just below Wray Villa (Phoenix house,
made of stucco which still stands). A separate structure (kitchen) sat
beside it.
Billy owned large amounts of land, as did his father before him, and the
1860 census (Schedule III) reveals that he woned 23 slaves and 3 slave
houses. Such assistance will explain how, in 1855, he could raise 3,500
bushels of corn. In a letter to the editor of the "Asheville News" on
November 29, 1855, he boasts of the amount and states that there were
many ears measuring fifteen inches in length.
County Court documents reveal that he often served as Patroller (of
slaves) in Cane River Township, superintended elections in 1850, and was
one of the superintendents of public schools in 1856. He assisted with
the collection of taxes in 1859.
During the Civil War, his sympathies were apparently with the Union. In
Marcus L. Penland's pension file for Cherokee Removal, there is an
affidavit by Isaac Boyles which states: "I remember that I interceded
for old Uncle William Ray, who was here (Asheville, NC under arrest, and
got him off." Thus, he had been imprisoned by the Confederate Home
Guard.
