April 12, 1864.......Last Sunday night a band of tories, headed by
Montrevail Ray, numbering about 75 men, had surprised the small guard he
had left at Burnsville, and broken open the magazine and removed all the
arms and ammunition. They had also broken open Brayley's [Bailey?]
store, and carried off the contents; had attacked Captain Lyons, the
local enrolling officer, in his room, wounding him slightly, but allowing
him to escape. They had broken all the guns they could not carry off,
taking about 100 State guns; also some bacon.

NC. He was buried in Riddle? Cemetery, Pensacola, NC. He has reference
number A.E.Riddle File. Benjamin Tyre Riddle was named in honor of his
uncle Tyre Riddle of Stokes County, NC. He was the 3rd son of John W.
Riddle, Sr. who was the 1st. Riddle in Buncombe (Yancey) County, NC.
Benjamin apparently married before he was 18 years of age. He bought a
parcel of land from his sister's husband Charles Bailey in 1824. He
continued to buy and sell land for the next 20 years. After his 1st. wife
died in about 1855, he married again in 1861. He was age 61 and she was
28. Their son Benjamin Ervin was born in 1862.

Your Grandpa (ed. Ben. Tyre Riddle) married Rachel Auston (Austin). Her
mother was an Allen. She had fourteen children. From a letter written by
Allan L. Poe to Chick Riddle, dated June 28, 1975, states that Robert
Austin was the father-in-law
of Benjamin T. Riddle. Children were:
i Mary "Pollia M." RIDDLE was born about 1818. From Mary N. Rust
Riddle's letter (6/14/27), Pollia married Sam McPeters
ii. Margaret RIDDLE was born on 28 Mar 1824 in Pensacola, Yancey
Co., NC. She died on 17 Mar 1862. She was buried in Riddle Cemetery,
Pensacola, NC.
iii. "Nellie" Elendor RIDDLE was born in 1826.
iv. Eliza A. RIDDLE was born about 1830 in Pensacola, Yancey Co.,

NC. Shown on IGI list at FHC W-S. Index of Deeds- Yancey County, Book 6
page 683, Deed recorded on 11 April 1874, shows that John Riddle and wife
Nancy sold to B.B. Riddle (Benjamin Britton) 200 acres of land on Lauel
Branch, Pensacola Yancey County, N.C. This John Riddle was the son of
Benjamin Tyre Riddle, and the
uncle of B. B. Riddle. From Mary N. Rust Riddle letter John's wife is
Nancy McKinney.
