Burial Notes (Wife)
Annie Phelan Callaghan is buried in the Phelan family mausoleum, Mount
Elliott Cemetery, Detroit, Mi
General Notes (Wife)
Anna ( Annie) Phelan was born 20 May 1846 in Toronto of Irish parents.
About 1859-1860 she married George Barrett in Canada, started a family
and emigrated to the US. They are listed in the 1870 census, living in
Detroit, Mi. By 1870, they have
three children. They moved to Sanilac County, Michigan, where her
husband George died in early 1874. In November, 1874, Annie married Amos
Barbour and together they had two children, Catherine Laura Barbour and
John Barbour. Her 2nd husband Amos Barbour died in April 1879, and Anne
Barbour is listed in the 1880 census living with her children Catherine
and John, from Amos Barbour and George Barrett, Jr. from her marriage to
George Barrett in Sanilac County, Mi. In 1882, Annie
marries for the 3d time, to Terrence Callaghan at Speaker, Sanilac
County, Michigan. She brings with her the two youngest children, John
and Catherine Barbour. Annie and her husband Terrence Callaghan live on
the farm in Sanilac County until Annie's death in 1906. In 1900, they
take in their grandsons, Martin Terrence Bertram and Amos J. Bertram (
the sons of Catherine and her husband John Bertram ) upon the untimely
death of the boys' father in a railroad accident in Vanderbilt. The two
boys are listed living with Annie and Terrence in the 1900 census.
Anne Callaghan's death in Detroit Oct 1906 was from a protracted bout
with jaundice. She had a very active life. Her 40 acre farm in Flynn
Twp, Sanilac County, is listed on the 1876, 1894, 1906, and 1930 plat
maps of the Township in Section 26. - Brent Bertram, g g grandson.
Obituary of Anna Phelan Callaghan, Brown City Banner
----- To Her Reward ------
Mrs. Terrance Callaghan, who for the past 36 years has resided with her
husband and family half a mile west of Omard in Flynn township and who
was loved and respected by the entire community, which knew her as a kind
and devoted mother and a friend to all, departed this life, at Harper
hospital in Detroit, on Monday, Oct 8, where she had been taken on the
previous Saturday by request of Judge James Phelan of the Recorders court
of that city, who when he learned of her critical illness from an acute
attack of jaundice, insisted that she be taken to Detroit.
Mrs. Callaghan was taken ill about six weeks ago and despite the
fact that the best medical skill was procured , the patient rapidly grew
worse and was taken to Detroit as above stated, accompanied by her
daughter, Mrs. Cassie Rupp and her physician Dr. J.W. Weed. The
deceased was born in Toronto, Ont, May 20, 1846. She was twice married.
She is survived by her husband and three children by her first husband,
Mrs. Albert House of Vanderbilt, Mich, Mrs. Cassie Rupp of Lansing and
John Barber at home.
The following is taken from the Detroit Journal of Oct. 10, 1906.
There was no session in Judge Phelan's court Monday. Mrs. Anna
Callaghan, aged 59, a sister of the judge, died in Harpers hospital early
in the morning. The judge , who is wrapped up in his family, is grief
stricken. Saturday, he had his sister removed from Brown City, Mich, to
Harper hospital, never leaving her bedside until the last. It is only a
little over a year that Judge Phelan lost his mother and the present
bereavement, therefore, is a hard blow to him.
The funeral of Mrs. Anna Callaghan, sister of Judge James Phelan of the
Recorder's court, who died at Harper hospital Monday was held from the
judge's residence at No. 206 Wabash Ave, at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning
from St. Vincent's church half an hour later. The services both at the
home and the church were attended by hundreds of sorrowing friends of the
deceased and the bereaved brother and sister. The casket was almost
hidden from view by the beautiful floral tributes which spoke eloquently
of the esteem in which the deceased was held.
Judge Phelan and his sister Miss Josie Phelan, are now the only
surviving members of a Family of 10 children.
--Brown City Banner, 12 Oct 1906.
( G G grandson note:
Anna Phelan married three times,
George Barrett who died in Sanilac , 1872
Amos Barbour who died in Sanilac , 1879

General Notes for Child John Howard FITZGERALD
John Fitzgerald, 69, community activist John Howard Fitzgerald once
rode his bicycle from Lansing to Niagara Falls. Fitzgerald, 69, once
an active member of various community groups in Lansing and other
Michigan cities, died Tuesday in Cadillac. 'He was quite and
organizer,' recalls his wife, Velma, who said Fitzgerald formed a boat
club in Kalamazoo and the Young Married Couples Club of the Lansing YMCA.
Fitzgerald joined the Oldsmobile Division's engineering department in
1933, right after graduating from high school. 'He started out his
life with very little,' his wife said. 'He educated himself.' During
World War II, Fitzgerald was loaned to an aviation company to design
aircraft. He left Olds in 1946 to join Checker Motors in Kalamazoo. He
later worked for the A.O.Smith Corp. in Ionia and the Mitchell Corp. in
Ionia and Cadillac. He did consulting work after retiring in 1977.
While in Lansing, Fitzgerald was on the board of deacons of First Baptist
Church. He was also active in the Masonic Lodge and the Elks.
Fitzgerald is survived by one son, one daughter, one brother, one sister
and five grandchildren.
