Three soldiers named Hensley (Benjamin, Henry, and Hickman apparently
served in the American Revolution and lived thereafter in the Toe River
Valley. Since the National Archives apparently has no pension files to
attest their service and residence here, I have had to rely upon bits of
information from "hither and yon". According to a militia list from
Henry County, Virginia, these three were among others who marched from
there to take part in the well known Battle of Guilford Court House at
North Carolina in 1781 (Hill, "History of Henry County, Virginia", p. 13,
as cited in" Families of Yancey County", Vol. V, No. 1, p.6). In the
1790 Census of N. C., persons of this name are living in Burke County, in
the areas that are now Mitchell and Yancey: Benjamin in the 10th
Company, apparently in Mitchell; Henry and Hickman in the 12th Company,
apparently in Yancey (the former in the Bee Log area and the latter on
Jacks Creek). The printed edition of the census apparently misspells
Hickman/Hicman as "Hirman." (Other Hensleys in the area are John and
James.)
That the Virginia Hensleys and the burke County Hensleys are the
same is supported by the tradition among Henry's descendants on Bald
Mountain Creek in Yancey, that he had served in the Revolution. (See
Kirby Ray Whitaker, They Were Trailblazers, Rays, p. 156, with
descendants to the 6th generation on the following pages.) Furthermore,
Henry was said to have been born in Virginia. [See MARCUS C. COOPER for
his wife.]
Hickman reportedly lived previously in Tennessee, and arrived in
what is now Yancey in 1787. By 1789, he had secured a land grant for 100
acres (Burke Co. No. 36) "...on McDowell's commonly called Jacks Creek,
on the West fork, one half mile above the mouth of the fork...", near
Sharp, with Henry Hensley as a Chain Carrier. Fortunately, the grant
gives both names for the creek, otherwise we would not know that
McDowells (mentioned in many grants) is the same as Jacks Creek.
Presumably, the east fork would be what is now called Mine Fork, so this
grant was on the main stream about one-half mile above the Day Book
junction.
In 1796, another grant was taken out jointly with David Vance: 100
acres on Jacks Creek (Buncombe File No. 697; Warrant No. 3216; remember
that Buncombe was taken from part of Burke in 1791). It was located
"..on a Branch of Jacks Creek that empties in just below Avery's [see
Waightstill Avery] survey (which was) sold to Edwards..." (apparently a
reference to JOHN EDWARDS, SOLDIER IN THE REVOLUTION).
Minutes of the Buncombe County Court contain the following
references to these Hensleys: Henry Hensley on committee to lay off a
road "from Rimes Creek to Robert Hinton's on Lindseys Creek, Cane River
(April, 1792); similar committee includes James and Henry Hensley (July,
1792); Hickman Hensley sworn in as Justice of the Peace (January, 1793);
tax listing areas include that of "Captain Hensley" (April, 1793; Captain
would refer to leadership of a militia company/ district); committee to
lay out a road from Hinton's Mill (Caney River) to Austin Choate's on
Ivey River includes John Hensley (July, 1793); Captain Hensley's company
to work on the road across Paint Spring Gap (July, 1794); Jacks Creek
mentioned as part of Captain Hensley's militia company (January, 1795);
Thomas Rhea to list property for taxes, as constable in Captain Hensley's
company (July, 1795; Thomas Ray reportedly married the daughter of
Hickman Hensley, named Ivey: see THE RAY FAMILY at #1); Hickman Hensley
to list taxes for his company (April, 1799); Hickman Hensley to
superintend election of members of the State Assembly, to be held at Ivey
River (July 1800). In April, 1802 either Hensley has moved, or someone
else now commands the militia company where he formerly lived; Hickman
Hensley to list taxes in Captain Edwards' company (April, 1804). No
further mention is made of these two Hensleys, so either they died, moved
away, or avoided the attention of the Court.
An article in FAMILIES OF YANCEY (IV No. 4, Dec. 1987, pp. 156-159)
states that Rev. War soldiers Henry and Hickman are brothers and the sons
of a Benjamin Hensley (who also had a son named Benjamin and several
others which are listed). It also gives the ancestry of Henry's wife,
barbara Angel: her father was Charles Angel (b. 1/6/1736; d. 1774/5 in
Surry Co. N.C.), who m. (1st) Elizabeth Washington and (2nd) Sibella
Cummings.

BIOGRAPHY: Hickman Hensley Sr is a proven son of Benjamin Hensley (c1730)
and Elizabeth (c1730) of VA and NC. In the Hickman Hensley - Elizabeth
Rentfrow family bible, he is listed as being born Apr 15, 1759 and a son
of Benjamin and Elizabeth Hensley. In 1778 he was listed on a militia
list in Henry Co, VA. By 1784 he had gone (briefly?) to Washington Co, VA
and was listed there on the 1784 tax list. By 1790 he had moved to what
is now Yancey Co, NC, but was then part of Burke County, and shortly
became Buncombe (in 1792). He was listed on the 1790 census in Burke Co,
NC with a large family. In the 1790's he was listed several times in the
Buncombe Co, NC court minutes as a Justice of the Peace and on juries.
The 1800 census of Buncombe Co, NC shows Hickman as age 26 to 44 (born ca
1755/1774). Hickman Hensley married Agness Fisher before 1778 in Henry
Co, VA or Surry Co, NC. She was a daughter of James Fisher. Her brother
Thomas Fisher left a Will in 1778 Surry Co, NC naming his sister Agness
Hensley, and also a sister Elizabeth Rentfrow.
BIOGRAPHY: Hickman and Agnes had several children, but only 4 are known
for sure, sons: Larkin, Samuel, William and James. Hickman Hensley had
another family with Elizabeth Rentfrow, they had nine children together,
all taking the name Rentfrow. Elizabeth was a daughter of Elizabeth
Fisher Rentfrow and John Rentfrow. Elizabeth (Sr) was Agness Fisher
Hensley's sister. That would make this Elizabeth (Jr) the neice of
Hickman, by marriage. This must have caused quite a stir! Anyway, the
Hensley - Rentfrow family bible names all of the Rentfrow children that
Hickman and Elizabeth had. Other records also prove that Hickman and
Elizabeth were not married. I've been told of some researchers who don't
want to acknowledge this, but it is well proven. Keep in mind that our
ancestors were just as human and fallable as we are.
BIOGRAPHY: Hickman Hensley and Agness Fisher apparently seperated, or
else she died before Hickman got involved with Elizabeth (Hickman and
Elizabeth's first child was born in 1794). There was a female age 45 and
up (born before 1755) in his household in 1800, but it isn't clear if
that is Agness or someone else. See Agness Hensley of Scott Co, VA.
BIOGRAPHY: Hickman seems to have left Buncombe Co, NC in the 1800 to 1810
timeframe and lived with Elizabeth Rentfrow in TN and he was possibly
still alive when she moved to IL in the 1820's. Hickman had apparently
made an excursion into central or west Tn by 1797 for he was listed on a
report of Whites in Indian country made that year. He was listed as
"Hickman Henslee", his occupation was "Hireling and Idler". He had gone
back to Buncombe Co, NC by 1800, for was listed on the census then. By
1810 he was gone from NC. His known Hensley children were all in Hickman
or Maury (now Lewis) Co, TN by ca 1810. Since the 1810 census is lost for
that area, we don't know where they were then. In 1820 they were in
Maury, Hickman and Wayne Co, TN. Hickman himself never was listed on
another census after 1800, but is thought by some to have died after 1820
in TN, or possibly in Effingham Co, IL.
BIOGRAPHY: In Goodspeed History of Lawrence Co, TN, it mentions brothers
Larkin, William, Samuel and James Hensley as early settlers of that area.
BIOGRAPHY: Hickman Hensley's children are not all proven. His son Larkin
Hensley is proven by Larkin's family bible. William, Samuel and James are
documented in an early history of Lawrence Co, TN (Goodspeed), but there
were several James Hensley's in the area, so it isn't entirely clear
which was which. On the other hand, all of Hickman Hensley and Elizabeth
Rentfrow's children are proven by Hickman's family bible. Unfortunately,
he didn't record any of his Hensley children in it.
BIOGRAPHY: Larkin Hensley was born 1779 in Henry Co, VA. His own family
bible records his birth date and that he is a son of Hickman and Agness
Hensley. Larkin's first known record was an 1803 deed in Buncombe Co, NC.
He purchased 136 acres from James Poteet. The same year he was deeded
land by John Hensley (probably his Uncle, brother of Hickman). In 1806 he
sold this same land to James Angel in two deeds. This strongly suggest
that he made his move to TN in 1806 or just afterwards. Larkin married
Margaret Hinson probably around this time, just before the move. The
early census records for TN are lost (1790, 1800 and 1810). The 1820
census only survived for western TN, but Larkin was not found on that
census. In 1830 and 1840 he was listed in Hickman Co, TN. In 1843 Lewis
County was created from part of Hickman, and he fell into the new county.
He was listed in Lewis Co, TN on the 1850 and 1860 census. He made his
will dated 1865 naming his wife and children and some grandchildren. His
family is fairly well documented from there on down.
BIOGRAPHY: Samuel Hensley was born ca 1780 in NC (probably Burke County).
No direct proof has been found that he is a son of Hickman Hensley, but
in Goodspeed History of Lawrence Co, TN he is listed as a brother of
Larkin, who is a proven son of Hickman. Samuel did live in the same area,
so it seems highly likely that he belongs to this family. Samuel married
ca 1814 in TN to Nancy Walker Ramsey, widow of William Ramsey. Samuel was
listed on the 1820 Wayne Co, TN census, and 1830 and 1840 Hickman Co, TN
(in the section that became Lewis Co, TN in 1843). Sometime in the 1840's
they moved to Effingham Co, IL where he was listed on the 1850 census.
Before 1855 they moved to neighboring Shelby Co, IL where he and his wife
Nancy both died about that time. Samuel and Nancy had several children
(per the 1820 thru 1840 census) that haven't been accounted for.
BIOGRAPHY: William Hensley was born ca 1785 in Burke (later Buncombe, now
Yancey) Co, NC. He went to TN and married Nancy (Gardner?) before 1810.
It isn't known if they married in NC or TN. Her maiden name isn't proven.

but in Goodspeed History of Lawrence Co, TN he is listed as a brother of
Larkin, who is a proven son of Hickman. William did live in the same

or less). In the 1850 census, William and Nancy were residing with Abel
T. Hensley, so that more or less confirms him as a son. The obituary of
the Rev. William G. Hensley (1813-1894) lists him as a son of William and
Nancy, and it was written by John Will Hensley a nephew of Rev William G.
Hensley. John Will is a son of James T. Hensley (c1810), so that seems to
prove William G and James T as sons of William and Nancy also. I have no
proof for Enoch H. Hensley (1822) who I also have listed as William's
son.

now Yancey) Co, NC. The "F" may stand for Fisher, as his maternal
grandfather was named James Fisher. No direct proof has been found that
James is a son of Hickman Hensley, but in Goodspeed History of Lawrence
