Good morning Brent,
Well, you are not going to believe this, but our Aloysius Phelan is the
very
same one that Michael Phelan has in his data base. I forwarded the only
picture we have of Aloysius to Michael, and he recognized him
immediately,
and said there was no doubt that this is one and the same person.
Yesterday, Michael provided us with a very valuable clue, namely that
Aloysius called himself "Alex". Immediately, I checked the census
records
at Ancestry.com. Voila, there was good old Alex/Aloysius in the 1910
census,
stationed in Wyoming, Laramie County, Fort Russell. There was a line
through his name though, saying he was on furlough, only provided his
marital status and no age, no place born, no place where parents where
born.
Strangely, his wife, Mary Ellen Farrell who is living with their daughter
in
Leavenworth, Kansas states she is single. We think this was not one of
the
happiest marriages after discovering this week that Aloysius and Mary
Ellen
married 27 Jan 1906, and their daughter was born 29 April 1906 ... you do
the math!
Michael said he was going over to Mt. Olivet cemetery today. He had
previously checked there for Aloysius Phelan, but was told no one by that
name was buried there. Hopefully, a check under Alex may provide the
answer.
From what we have gathered so far now, we believe that Aloysius was in
the
service when he met Mary Ellen Farrell, maybe even knew Herbert McGuire
and
Richard Bergath, men that married sisters of Mary Ellen ... all were in
the
service. It is plausible that Aloysius was stationed in Leavenworth, and
that is where he met Mary Ellen Farrell.
This whole matter is stranger than fiction. We had seen the postings
about
a Michigan Phelan, but totally dismissed a possible connection, since to
our
knowledge, he was born in Canada. What a surprise!!!!
Weird, when I think how many times I have been to Mt. Olivet cemetery
....
many family members of my ex-husband are buried there.
We will be in Reno for the next two days, and I will let you know what
develops.
Best regards,
Kelly James and Maria
