In 1860, Mary Allen (78 years) is living with Young Allen, suspect she is
his mother. Note that John Allen had an unmarried daughter named
Paulina, this is a hopeful guess as to his whereabouts. (Note that
Paulina Wilson appears in 1860 and 1870 census, married to William
Wilson, who is unmarried in 1850).• Rev. Claim, 21 Jan 1855

A veteran of the American Revolution who resided in Yancey County after
his term of service was John Allen. In his pension application (S-6481
in the National Archives) he states that he first enlisted in February of
1778 as a citizen of Wake County, NC, for a term of four months. This
was for service with the North Carolina Militia, for excursions against
the Torries (supporters of the English Crown), under the command of
Captain Huston (of Guilford Co.?). In June of that year, he enlisted in
"the regular army of N. C." for the duration of the War, serving part of
the time under General Greene and General Gates. Among the "fights" in
which he participated was the Battle at Guilford Court House (Greensboro,
N.C.). After that, he became so sick that he was discharged from
service, having served a total of 3-4 years.
The application-statement was made before the County Court of Yancey
on October 13, 1851, when the soldier was aged 95. He explains that he
did not apply earlier (since the pension-act was approved in 1832)
because he had lost his discharge papers and assumed that he could not be
placed on the pension-roll without it. His statement is verified by the
Rev. John Wheeler and W.J. Lewis, both residents of the County.
Allen apparently was dead by 1853, when a statement by Joseph P.
Allen attests that the application was indeed signed by John Allen (by
means of making his "mark"). One report is that he died in 1860.
A pension was granted, in the amount of $46.66 per year, based upon
14 months service.
I have not spotted this elderly gentleman in 1850 Census of
Yancey County, so perhaps he lived elsewhere at the time. There are
several younger persons of this name, however, as well as two Josephs.
Further information may be found in Kirby Ray Whitaker's Vol. II of
the Ray Genealogy (Ray History, privately printed and distributed, 1985):
John Allen was born in Scotland; emigrated to America at age 14 and
settled in North Carolina; he was part of the convention that drew up the
Mecklenburg Resolves (May 20, 1775); married Molly Turner. Among his
children was Martha ("Patty"), who married Amos Lafayette ("A.L.") Ray
and lived in Pensacola; she died on June 10, 1906, states that she is
aged 98, and living with a daughter; states that her father, John Allen,
served in the Revolution (p.284; see also pp. 223, 257). A list of her
children may be found in Vol. I at p. 104.
Allen reportedly lived on Prices Creek, and old deeds would seem to
confirm this (e.g., Book I, p. 101: Amos L. Ray to Joseph Shepherd on
Caney River, on John Allen's mill creek, 1831; Book I, p. 165: land
deeded to John Allen in 1794 on both sides of Cane River "including the
great Cane Bottom"; Book I, p. 252: Hintons Creek flows into John
Allen's Mill Creek which flows into Cane River near Proffitt's place).
There are at least two Allen family cemeteries in the Prices Creek
area, both on Banks Creek. If the old veteran is in either of them, his
grave is unmarked.
