was born about 1758 in the Shenandoah Valley area of Augusta County,
Virginia, to an elder George Hurst who had taken land on the south branch
of the Potomac River in 1754. This was a land grant issued by Col.
George Washington (listed in his personal papers under "Sundry Items")
for service in the French and Indian Wars. The land was on Will's Creek
near Cumberland, Maryland, on the West Virginia side. At this time, the
Hursts were surrounded by "potential" in-laws including the Harmons,
Jacob Whittemore, William and Samuel Henderson, and James Dyer --
families who would later migrate to Buncombe County in North Carolina.
There were other persons too, whose descendants would later marry into
the Hurst family in Georgia, such as Col. William Preston, John Malcom,
and James Adams.
THe elder George Hurst was part of a larger Hurst family migration
detailed in J.C. Hurst's book, "The Hursts of Shenandoah, but his exact
kinship in the book is unknown. Before the Revolution, a large
Shenandoah Hurst Group eventually travelled into Tennessee (then the
State of Franklin) and settled in Claiborne County, where hundreds of
Hursts still live today. George Sr. moved south to the Augusta area.
Across the Blue Ridge in Amherst County, (then Albemarle ) was the
Montgomery family of Rockfish River near Wood's Gap (a passage through
the mountains) into which family George's grandson John Henry Hurst would
marry later on in Jasper County, Georgia.
George II and his probable brother James travelled over the
mountains into Surry County, N.C. where they bought land in 1781 near Fox
Knob Mountain. Living around them near the Yadkin River were the
Henderson, Martin, Harmon, Carter, Montgomery, Adams and other families
who would migrate later. James was listed as "sick and infirm" in 1789,
excusing him from "road work", and probably died before 1807. George's
children were all born and reared here until George sold his land to
Moses Woodruff, and bought land in Buncombe County from the heirs of
Jacob Byler who had been killed earlier in an explosion at his powder
mill on Big Ivy Creek.
George married about 1782 , probably to a Martin. His first born,
James, arrived in 1783 and was followed by seven other children.
In his old age, George lived with his son Pleasant according to the
1840 census, and with his daughter Mary's family, the Greenwoods later.
His house had burned, forcing him and his wife to ask aid of their
children. He died shortly after his wife, around 1844 and is probably
buried in the old Greenwood Cemetery on Martin's Creek Road near
Barnardsville.
